When to share difficult family truths with older children

My teenage daughter and I both know that my divorce from her dad was messier than I've ever admitted to her, and now that she's older she's asking harder questions about why certain family members don't talk to me anymore. I want to be honest but I also don't want to burden her with adult complexities she shouldn't have to carry.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

The protective stories told to a child are becoming inadequate as they mature and seek authentic understanding.
