When family legacy depends on the next generation's interest and participation

Our family business has been passed down for three generations and my cousin and I are supposed to be the ones teaching the trade to the next generation, but his kids are interested and mine aren't — and I'm starting to resent being the one who has to carry all the knowledge while he gets to actually pass it on. We've never talked about what happens if this doesn't work out evenly.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

Legacy requires willing recipients, and when investment and inheritance don't align across family lines, old relationships strain under new weight.
