Anatta: The Illusion of Fixed Self

The Buddhist concept that there is no permanent, unchanging self, liberating you from identifying rigidly with body image and appearance.

Why It Matters

Anatta, or non-self, is one of Buddhism's most radical insights and directly addresses the root of body image suffering. Dipa Ma understood that attachment to a fixed identity—including a fixed body image—creates the pain of inevitable change. The self we think we are, including our body, is not solid or permanent; it is constantly shifting, conditioning, and becoming. When you internalize anatta, the devastating question 'Is my body good enough?' loses its grip, because there is no unchanging 'you' that needs to meet a standard. Each moment brings a new configuration of body, mind, and perception. This understanding doesn't make you careless about health or appearance; rather, it frees you from the existential anxiety underlying body image distortion. You can care for your body and make healthy choices from compassion rather than fear of being 'wrong.' Dipa Ma's fearlessness stemmed partly from this insight: she was not defending a fixed identity that could be damaged by aging, illness, or changing appearance.
