Mindful Awareness of Craving

The practice of observing alcohol cravings without judgment, recognizing them as temporary mental and bodily sensations rather than commands to obey.

Dipa
Why It Matters

Dipa Ma taught that craving arises in the body and mind as a natural phenomenon, not as an inherent truth or necessity. By cultivating mindful awareness, we observe alcohol cravings as they emerge—noticing the physical sensations, emotional triggers, and thought patterns—without immediately reacting. This Buddhist approach transforms our relationship with desire: instead of fighting cravings or surrendering to them, we recognize them as clouds passing through the sky of awareness. For alcohol use, this means developing the capacity to feel the urge without acting on it, understanding that cravings have a natural lifecycle and will dissolve if we remain present and still. This practice builds the fearlessness Dipa Ma emphasized, as we discover that discomfort itself is neither dangerous nor permanent.
