Chitta Vritti: Mental Modification Observation

The practice of witnessing mental fluctuations without judgment, allowing shadow aspects to surface and be recognized rather than suppressed.

Why It Matters

Chitta vritti, the modifications of mind described in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, refers to the constant ripples of thought, emotion, and perception arising in consciousness. In shadow work, this concept becomes transformative: rather than fighting our darker impulses, fears, or rejected aspects, we observe them as mental modifications—temporary disturbances in awareness. By cultivating the witnessing consciousness that Patanjali prescribes, we create space between ourselves and our shadow material. This non-reactive observation allows disowned parts to emerge safely. When anger, jealousy, or shame arise, we note them as vritti without identifying as them. This practice integrates shadow work with psychological mastery by teaching that awareness itself is healing. The shadow loses its power to control us when we stop resisting it and simply watch its movements with equanimity.
