The shadow is Jung's name for the constellation of qualities, impulses, and aspects of self that have been rejected, denied, or disowned — everything that cannot be admitted into the conscious self-image. Shadow work is not the discovery of hidden evil but the retrieval of energy and wholeness: what has been denied does not disappear but operates autonomously, often with greater force. Integration returns these qualities to conscious relationship, where they become available rather than dangerous.
Each step builds on the last.
