Kleshas: The Afflictions Underlying Rumination

The five fundamental afflictions (kleshas) that generate and perpetuate rumination and psychological suffering.

Why It Matters

Patanjali identifies five kleshas—avidya (ignorance), asmita (ego), raga (attachment), dvesha (aversion), and abhinivesha (fear of death)—as the root causes of psychological suffering and rumination. Rumination is rarely random; it is fueled by these deeper afflictions. Fear-based rumination stems from abhinivesha—existential anxiety. Worry about loss comes from raga and dvesha—attachment to what you want and aversion to what you fear. Self-critical rumination emerges from asmita—ego-identification. Understanding the klesha beneath your rumination pattern is transformative. Rather than fighting the rumination directly, you address its source. Patanjali teaches that all kleshas ultimately arise from avidya—the fundamental misperception that you are separate, vulnerable, and incomplete. This misperception generates compulsive mental loops as the ego attempts to secure itself through control and repetitive thinking. By recognizing which klesha fuels your rumination, you can work directly with the root cause rather than endlessly managing the symptom.
