After years voicing others, how do I find myself again?
You can do almost anything with your voice, become anyone, and after a career of it you find you are grieving something: all those years spent being everyone but yourself. That is a profound and honest sorrow. To pour your whole self into becoming other people, again and again, can leave you unsure where they end and you begin. Consider what that gift actually required. To voice others so fully, you had to understand them, feel them, lend them something real from inside you. Those characters were not made from nothing; they were made from you, from your empathy, your range, your humanity. You did not disappear into them. You gave a piece of yourself to each one. The self you fear you lost was present in all of it, quietly, the whole time. Still, the grief is asking for something, so give it a hearing. Spend some time now on your own voice, the one that speaks as no one but you. Say what you actually think, write in your own words, or simply sit in silence and listen for what you want. The career let you be everyone. This next season can be where you finally let yourself be you, and discover that self was never truly gone.
