Am I working late to avoid going home?
The long hours are not only ambition or duty, and part of you knows it. Work is where the rules are clear, where you know what to do, where you feel capable. Home is harder and less certain. So you stay a little longer at the desk, partly to put off walking through the door. That is an honest thing to admit, and admitting it is the start. Work makes an easy hiding place because it looks so responsible from the outside. No one questions the person who stays late. But the thing at home does not shrink while you avoid it. It waits, and often it grows, and the distance between you and the people there grows with it. Competence at work cannot substitute for showing up where it is hard. You do not have to fix home tonight. Just go home on time one day this week and be fully there when you arrive. Have the small conversation, sit in the discomfort, let it be awkward. The clarity you love at work was built by facing things, not fleeing them. Home responds to the same courage.
