Do I owe anything to the people coming up after me?

You have not really thought about this, and there is no shame in that. Most people are busy climbing their own path and never stop to look at the ones coming up behind them. But you are looking now, and that is worth something, because the question you are avoiding has a real answer. You owe them more than you might think, because someone did it for you. Whatever you know, whatever chances you got, you did not build entirely alone. People taught you, opened doors, gave you a shot. The debt for that is not usually paid back to them. It is paid forward, to the ones now standing where you once stood. You do not have to become a formal mentor overnight. Start small. Find one person earlier in the path than you, and give them one real thing: an honest piece of advice, an introduction, twenty minutes of your actual attention. See how it feels. That first small act is usually where the whole thing starts.
