Do my investment returns come from creating value or taking it?

This is one of the few questions in finance worth losing sleep over, and most people in your seat never ask it. That you do says something good about you. Sit with it rather than rushing to a comfortable answer. Value creation and value extraction can look identical on a spreadsheet; the returns are green either way. The difference is what got left behind. Did the company come out stronger, the workers steadier, the customers better served? Or did the money simply move from them to you? The numbers will not tell you. The people will. Take one deal, a real one, and trace where your gain came from. Follow it back to its source. If it came from something built, be proud. If it came from something stripped, let that teach you what to fund next. Your honesty here shapes everything after.
