Does optimizing everything in a business actually make it better?

You can design how an entire business runs, tune it, smooth it, make it efficient. And under the skill sits an honest doubt: with all this optimizing, did anything actually get better, or just faster? That you even ask this is a sign of wisdom, not of a problem. Most people never stop to wonder. Optimization has no opinion about what matters. It makes whatever you point it at more efficient, but it cannot tell you whether that thing was worth doing. A process can be flawless and still serve nothing that matters to a real person. The question is not whether you optimized well. It is whether you optimized the right things. Take one process you are proud of and ask a different question of it: who is genuinely better off because this exists? If you can name a real person and a real good, keep going. If you cannot, that is worth sitting with. Aim your skill at things that matter, and the efficiency finally means something.
