How do I align executives with competing priorities on product?
You can get leaders nodding along on product direction, but underneath they are pulling in different directions, each protecting their own priorities. Steering between those competing interests is delicate work, and feeling how hard it is means you are taking it seriously rather than pretending a consensus you do not have. Executives rarely disagree about the product for product reasons. They disagree because each is accountable for something different, and the direction touches those things unequally. The way through is not a better argument but understanding what each of them is really trying to protect, and framing the direction in terms of what they each stand to gain. So before your next alignment push, talk to each leader alone and learn what they most need to win. Then show how the product direction serves those needs, or be honest about the trade-offs. Alignment is built one private conversation at a time, long before the group meeting where everyone is watching each other.
