How do I carry the responsibility of command when no one shares it?
The final call is yours, and there is no one to hand it to. The lives aboard, the ship, the cargo, all of it comes to rest on you alone. That weight is real, and the loneliness of it is one of the hardest parts of command. Feeling it does not mean you are unfit. It means you understand the job. You cannot make the responsibility lighter by wishing it shared, but you can carry it better. Part of that is preparation: the more you have trained, drilled, and thought through the bad scenarios in calm water, the less you decide alone in the storm, because your past self is there with you. And part of it is accepting that being the one it rests on is not a burden to escape but the meaning of your role. When the weight feels like too much, narrow it to the next decision in front of you. You do not have to carry the whole ocean at once, only the next right call. Make that one well, then the next. The solitude is real, but it is carried one steady decision at a time.
