How do I carry the weight of animals I could not save?
Every animal you could not save, every hard decision to end suffering, leaves a small weight, and you can feel them stacking up inside you. That accumulation is not a sign you are too soft for this work. It is the sign of someone who never stopped caring, and caring has a cost. The weight is real, and it deserves to be set down sometimes, not just carried in silence. The mercy is that you were often not choosing between life and death, but between suffering and peace. Ending an animal's pain when nothing else could help is not a failure. It is one of the kindest things a person can do, and it is a burden precisely because you take it seriously. Carrying it well means honoring the loss without letting it convince you that you failed the ones you could not fix. Find a way to release the weight instead of storing it. Some people keep a small ritual, a moment or a note to mark a loss and let it move through them. Others talk it out with someone who understands the work. Choose one way to grieve on purpose, regularly. You are not meant to hold all of it alone. Setting some down is what lets you keep showing up with a whole heart.
