How do I carry the weight of keeping children safe?
You can walk into a room full of children and know, without thinking, who is about to fall, who wandered too far, what could go wrong. That instinct took years to build. And you carry it constantly, a weight no one sees on the schedule or the paycheck. It is real, and it is heavy. The hardest part is that this work is invisible when it goes right. Nobody thanks you for the accident that did not happen. But the calm of that room, the fact that every child went home whole, is your doing. The absence of disaster is not nothing. It is the whole thing, and it exists because you were there. Since the world will not count this weight, you must count it yourself, and set it down sometimes. Find one person who understands what the work really takes and say it plainly to them. And when your shift ends, let the vigilance end too. You are allowed to put it down. Carrying it every waking hour is not part of the job.
