How do I cope with the calls I couldn't save?

The ones you could not save do not stay at work. They ride home with you and sit in the quiet. The kids are the heaviest, because everything in you says they should have had more time. Carrying that does not mean you are broken. It means you are still human under the uniform. You were never the one who decided who lived. You showed up, you did everything your training and your hands could do, and sometimes it was not enough to beat what was already done. That is the hard truth of the work. Your job was to try with everything you had, and you did. These images need somewhere to go, or they build up in silence. Say their names out loud to someone you trust, another firefighter, a counselor, anyone who will not flinch. You do not have to forget them. You have to stop carrying them alone.
