How do I deal with doing invisible work no one counts?

You do the work that holds the place together, the work no one lists or thanks you for, and yet somehow everyone assumes you will keep doing it. The resentment you feel is fair. Invisible labor is still labor, and being expected to give it freely wears on anyone. The hard truth is that the institution will happily let this stay invisible, because invisible work is free work. It will not start counting on its own. If it is going to be seen, you are the one who will have to bring it into the light, gently but plainly. So start making it visible. Keep a record of what you carry, and name it where it counts, in reviews and in conversations with those who decide. And where the giving has become one-sided, let yourself pull back a little. You are allowed to do less of what is neither counted nor shared. Being taken for granted is not a duty.
