How do I deal with split-second decisions that haunt me afterward?
The routine calls you have learned to carry. It is the split-second, blurred ones that follow you home, replaying in the dark with all the time you never had in the moment. That is not weakness. That is a conscience doing its work. Judge the decision by what you knew then, not by what you learned after. In the moment you had partial facts and a fraction of a second. Replaying it with hindsight is a trial where you are both the accused and the judge who now knows everything. That is not a fair court, and you keep losing it. Talk about the ones that haunt you, out loud, with someone who understands the job. Kept inside, they grow teeth. Said plainly to another person, they shrink back to human size. You made a human call with what you had. Let that be enough to carry it.
