How do I design my own rigorous research without feeling overwhelmed?

Following a study design and building your own are two very different things, and the jump between them overwhelms almost everyone. When you follow a design, the hard choices were already made for you. Designing your own means facing all of them at once, and that flood of decisions is what feels impossible. It is not that you lack the ability. You are seeing the full weight of the task for the first time. A strong design is not born whole. It is built one decision at a time: what is the question, what would answer it, what could fool you, how do you guard against that. Take them in order and each one is manageable. The overwhelm comes from trying to hold every choice in your head together instead of settling them one by one. Start with the single question you actually want to answer, written in one plain sentence. Everything else in the design exists to serve that sentence. Get it clear and specific first, and the rest of the choices will have something solid to hang on.
