How do I diagnose an animal that can't tell me what's wrong?

Your patients cannot tell you where it hurts or when it started, and so the whole diagnosis rests on what you can observe and piece together. That is genuinely hard, and feeling overwhelmed by it is not weakness. It is respect for how much you are being asked to read from silence. But the animal is telling you things, just not in words. The posture, the gait, the appetite, the way it flinches or holds still. The owner's account fills in more. Your job is to become a patient reader of these signs, gathering them methodically rather than expecting one to shout the answer. Work through the body in order, use your exam and your tests, and let the picture assemble piece by piece. Start by trusting the process over the pressure. On your next tough case, slow down and write out what you observe before you leap to conclusions. The animal cannot speak, but it is not silent. Learning to hear what it does say is the whole craft, and you get better at it every case. You are learning a language, and you are further along than the fear lets you feel.
