How do I feel confident in the field without a hospital's resources?
In the field you feel the absence of everything a hospital gives you, the machines, the specialists, the safety of many hands. Without them you feel lost, as if your skill drained away with the walls around you. That feeling is real, but it is misreading the situation. You did not lose your ability. You lost your props, and props were never the source of your skill.\nWhat a hospital really provides is backup. What the field asks of you is judgment, the ability to do the most important things well with what you actually have. That is a different strength, and in some ways a higher one. The best field providers are not miniature hospitals. They are calm people who know which few actions matter most right now and do them.\nSo shift how you prepare. Instead of mourning the tools you lack, master the tools you carry until you know them cold. Know exactly what your bag can do and cannot do, so you are never surprised by your own kit. Then, on each call, ask one question: what is the single most important thing this person needs in the next few minutes? Answer that well, again and again. Confidence in the field grows from doing the vital few things reliably, not from having everything.
