How do I feel good enough when I'm a generalist, not a specialist?
You keep everything running by doing a little of everything, and it leaves you wondering if you are truly excellent at anything. In a world that praises specialists, being the one who does it all can feel like being master of none. But that story sells you short. Making many different parts work together is its own skill, and it is rarer than you think. Specialists go deep on one thing. You see how the whole machine fits and keep it moving. That takes judgment, adaptability, and a wide kind of competence that no single expert has. Do not mistake broad for shallow. Range is a real strength. If there is one area you would love to go deeper in, you can, on purpose, without giving up what makes you valuable. But do it because it calls you, not because you are ashamed of being a generalist. One step: write down the different things you juggle in a normal week. Seeing the full list usually cures the feeling that you are not good at anything.
