How do I find a mentor when I don't have any?

Standing where you are, with no one in your corner, the whole thing can feel like a locked club you were never invited to. It is not. Most mentoring never starts with the word mentor. It starts with one person taking an interest because you asked a good question and listened. You do not need to find a wise elder to adopt you. You need a handful of people a few steps ahead who are willing to answer one question at a time. That is a much smaller ask, and people say yes to it far more often than you expect. So make the small ask. Find one person whose work you admire and send a short, specific message this week. Not can you mentor me, but a single honest question about something they have clearly figured out. Do that a few times and one of those threads will grow into something real.
