How do I find real savings in my spending data?

Staring at a wall of spend data and seeing no savings is not a sign you are missing something obvious. Savings hide in patterns, and patterns only appear when you group the data the right way. The insight is there. You just have not sorted it into view yet. Start simple. Sort your spending from largest to smallest and look at the top few categories, because that is where real money lives. Then within those, look for the same thing bought many ways, too many suppliers, prices that vary for identical items, or purchases that skipped any negotiation. Those are your veins of gold. Pick your single biggest spending category this week and just study it. Who are you paying, for what, at what price, and could it be consolidated or renegotiated? You do not need to boil the ocean. One category, understood deeply, will show you more savings than a shallow look at everything.
