How do I get patients to actually change their habits?
You can give clear instructions all day. What eludes you is the real goal, getting patients to actually do things differently once they leave your chair. That gap is one of the oldest problems in all of health. Telling someone what to do and getting them to do it are two completely different things. Instructions fail because they ask for too much, too vaguely. Take better care of your gums does not stick. People change when the new habit is tiny, specific, and tied to something they already do. The size of the ask matters more than the strength of the reason. So instead of a list of everything they should do, pick the one change that matters most and make it absurdly small and concrete, floss the two front teeth after you brush at night, that is it. One small thing, anchored to a habit they already have, actually gets done. Master that, and you will change more than any full set of instructions ever did.
