How do I handle a child's difficult behavior without losing it?
You can draw most children in now, get them playing, laughing, learning. That is a lovely skill. Then one child's behavior blows past everything you know and you feel swamped. That overwhelm does not erase your progress. It just marks the edge of it, and every skilled person has an edge. Difficult behavior is rarely about you and rarely about being bad. It is a child who is flooded and out of tools, showing you the only way they can. You cannot reason a flooded child back to calm. You can be the steady, boring, safe thing in the room until the storm passes, and that alone is skilled work. Pick the behavior that overwhelms you most and make one small plan for it before it happens again. How will you keep your own voice low? Where can the child go to settle? Practice the plan in your head. You do not have to fix the child in the moment. You only have to stay steady, and that you can learn.
