How do I handle a disengaged or resistant group?
You can facilitate well now, most rooms come along with you. The ones that beat you are the checked-out and the arms-crossed, the groups that give you nothing back. Those rooms are hard for everyone. Do not take their silence as proof you are failing. Disengagement is usually a message, not a verdict on you. People check out because they feel talked at, because they do not see what is in it for them, or because someone decided this for them. Resistance often hides the same thing. The fix is rarely more energy from you. It is handing them a reason to lean in. Early in your next tough session, stop presenting and ask them something real: what would make this hour worth their time. Then bend the session toward the answer. You do not have to drag a room. You have to give it a reason to come, and usually it will.
