How do I handle being blamed when something ships broken?
You catch what others miss, and yet when something slips through, the blame lands on you. That stings because it is backward, the person guarding the gate gets faulted for the one thing that got past, while the hundred things you stopped go unmentioned. The unfairness is real, and you are right to feel it. No single person can catch everything, and a bug that ships is a failure of the whole process, not proof that you are bad at your job. Quality is shared, built by design, review, and testing together. When you carry the blame alone, part of what is happening is that the team has quietly let you hold what belongs to everyone. That is worth naming, calmly. Do two things. Keep a simple record of what you catch, so your value is not measured only by the rare miss. And after an escape, steer the conversation from who is at fault to how it got through and what would catch it next time. You cannot control being blamed, but you can control whether the story stays about you or becomes about the process.
