How do I handle competing interests and pressure when working with stakeholders?
You have learned to sit in the room with people who want different things, and that is real progress. What still trips you is the moment when their wants collide and every eye turns to you. The pressure feels like it is asking you to make everyone happy at once. It is not, and it never was. Your job is not to win the room or please it. Your job is to be clear and fair, and to let each side feel heard even when they do not get their way. People can accept a hard answer. What they cannot accept is feeling ignored. That is where most of the heat comes from. Before the next hard meeting, name to yourself the one thing you actually stand for. Then let the competing interests do their pulling around that fixed point. You do not have to hold everyone. You only have to hold your center, and speak from it plainly.
