How do I handle the business side of running my own trade?

You are excellent at the trade, and now you are drowning in bidding, paperwork, and payroll that have nothing to do with it. That does not mean you made a mistake. It means you took on a second job, running a business, that no one ever trained you for. Of course it feels clumsy at first. These are skills, not talents you are born with. You learned to diagnose a system you could not see, and you can learn to write a bid and run payroll the same way, one repetition at a time. Give yourself the same patience you gave yourself as an apprentice. You are an apprentice again, just in a new trade. You do not have to master all of it alone. A good bookkeeper or a simple software tool can carry the parts that drain you most, so you stay on the tools you love. Start by handing off the single task you dread the most. Freeing that up will remind you why you started this.
