How do I handle the weight of too many cases and too little time?
You hold something enormous — a person's freedom — with more cases than any one person can truly carry. Of course it keeps you up at night. The stakes are real, and the shortage of time is not a story you are telling yourself. You are being asked to do the impossible and to feel every gap where you fall short. You cannot give every case the hours it deserves, and no amount of guilt creates more time. What you can do is spend the time you have on purpose instead of drowning in all of it at once. Triage honestly. Put your energy where it changes the most, and forgive yourself for what the caseload, not your character, makes impossible. The nights are the hardest part. When your mind replays the cases, write the worry down and name the one thing you can actually do tomorrow. Then let the rest wait until you can act on it. You are one person against a broken math problem. Do your work well, defend your rest so you can keep doing it, and stop grading yourself against a standard no human could meet.
