How do I keep my integrity as a lawyer in an adversarial system?

You work in a system built on conflict. One side pushes, the other pushes back, and it can feel like winning is the only thing that matters. But you sense there is something larger you serve too: not just your client, but the law's purpose, which is justice. Holding both at once is hard, and the fact that it troubles you means you have not lost it. You do not have to choose between being a good advocate and being a good person. Fight hard for your client, and refuse to lie, hide, or cheat to do it. The rules of the game already leave room for that. Your integrity is not a weakness in the fight; it is the part of you that will still be standing when the case is over. Pick one line you will not cross, and name it clearly to yourself before the pressure comes. When the moment arrives, you will not have to decide in the heat of it. You will already know who you are.
