How do I learn to source strategically instead of just ordering?

Placing an order is answering a question someone else asked. Sourcing strategically is asking the question yourself: what do we truly need, from whom, and why them? That shift feels big, but it starts with curiosity, not expertise. Strategy is really just looking upstream. Instead of buying what you always buy, ask where this comes from, who else could supply it, and what would happen if that source disappeared. Those questions turn a task into a craft. Pick one thing you order often and study it. Find two alternative suppliers, learn what drives their price, and note the risks. You do not need to change anything yet. Just seeing the whole board is the first real step from ordering to sourcing.
