How do I make my work about more than just myself?

You have noticed that you mostly think of work in terms of what it gives you, pay, standing, comfort, and you would like it to mean more than that. Just seeing this honestly is a real beginning. Nobody moves toward service while insisting they already serve. You looked plainly, and that is the door. Here is the good news: your work almost certainly already helps other people. You may just have stopped seeing it, because you were watching what came back to you instead of what went out. The contribution was there the whole time. The task now is not to change your job but to change where you look. So start paying attention to the other end. Each day, name one person, a customer, a coworker, a stranger down the line, who is a little better off because you did your work. You do not have to stop caring about what you earn. You are just widening the picture until you can see who you serve as well as what you get.
