How do I pass down a craft that may not outlast me?
You have read these waters your whole life, and now the catch is thinning and the trade is fading. To grieve that is right. You are not just losing a job. You are watching a way of knowing the world, one that lives in your hands, come to an end. That sorrow deserves to be honored, not brushed aside. But a craft is not only the trade it feeds. Even if the boats stop, what you know, the patience, the reading of weather and water, the respect for something bigger than yourself, is worth handing on. It may not pass down as a living the way it did to you. It can still pass down as knowledge, as story, as a way of being. Find one person who wants to learn, even a piece of it, and start teaching now while your hands still remember. Write down what you know, take someone out, tell the stories. You cannot promise the trade will outlast you. You can make sure the knowing does not sink with the last boat.
