How do I plan lessons that actually reach my students?

Following the curriculum is one job. Building something that lands with the real kids in front of you is another, and it is harder because those kids are not a plan. They are twenty different people with different starting points, and trying to hold all of that at once is what floods you.\nYou do not have to reach every child in every lesson. That is an impossible standard, and chasing it is a big part of the overwhelm. A lesson that connects with most of the room, and leaves you room to sit with the ones who need more, is a good lesson. The perfect version that reaches everyone equally does not exist for anyone.\nStart smaller than feels right. Pick one lesson this week and think about just three students, not the whole class. What would make it click for them? Plan for those three. You will usually find that what helps them helps many others too, and you have a way in that you can build on.
