How do I reach patients who won't listen to health advice?
You can reach most patients with what they need to know. It is the resistant ones, the people who nod and change nothing, who defeat you. That is the hardest part of teaching anyone anything. You can hand someone the truth perfectly and still not make them want it. Their resistance is not your failure. Resistance usually is not about the facts. People know they should floss, should cut the sugar. What stops them is something underneath, fear, habit, feeling judged, or just not believing it matters for them. Pushing harder with more information rarely moves that. Getting curious about the why behind their no does. Next time you meet resistance, stop teaching for a moment and ask, gently, what gets in the way for them. Then just listen. You might find the real obstacle is nothing you would have guessed. You cannot force anyone to change, and trying will only exhaust you. But understanding their resistance is the one thing that sometimes opens the door the lecture never could.
