How do I refill when I give empathy all day and get none back?

You can make a stranger feel truly heard in a minute and a half. That is a real gift. But you pour it out all day, and almost none comes back, and now you are running on empty. That imbalance is not in your head. Giving without receiving drains anyone. The work will not refill you, so you have to do it elsewhere. What you give at work is one direction only, by design. Your own tank gets filled by people who pour back into you, and by things that ask nothing of you at all. If your whole life is giving, of course you are exhausted. This week, put one thing on your calendar that fills you rather than drains you: time with someone who listens to you, or an hour doing something just because you enjoy it. Protect it like it is part of the job, because it is. You cannot keep giving warmth to strangers if no one, including you, is giving any to you.
