How do I stay true to real learning when academia is all politics and metrics?

You came to this work for the truth, and now you spend your days on rankings, funding, and campus politics. The gap between why you started and what fills your calendar is real, and it wears on you. You are right to notice it. Something worth protecting is being crowded out. The institution will always have its games. You cannot win them all or ignore them entirely; you need the job. But the games do not have to own you. In your teaching, your reading, your questions, you can still keep the real thing alive. The metrics measure a shadow of the work. You know where the actual work happens. Protect one space that is purely about truth, not points. A seminar, an hour of reading, one honest conversation with a student. Guard it. That small preserved space is how the calling survives the machinery around it.
