How do I stop getting defensive when someone gives me feedback?
You know this pattern well by now: the flash of defensiveness, then hours later the clear-eyed realisation that they were right — and by then the moment, and sometimes the relationship, has already taken the hit. The knowing does not come fast enough to help you in the room. The defensiveness is a reflex, not a decision, which is why willpower alone does not stop it. But you can put a small gap between the feedback and your reaction, and in that gap you get to choose. You do not have to respond to feedback at the speed it arrives. Almost nothing requires an answer in that first hot second. So build yourself one sentence to buy the gap: "Let me think about that and come back to you." Say it every time, before the reflex fires. Then go have the clear-eyed thought in private, on your own time — and bring it back to them. You will reach the same wise conclusion, but early enough to protect the relationship.
