How do I stop managing like a technical expert?

You were brilliant at the work itself. That was your identity, the person who knew the answer, who could out-build anyone. Now you manage, and the job asks for different things, reading people, playing the long game, navigating politics, and you are still leading with the old identity because it is the one that made you. There is nothing shameful in this. The very excellence that got you promoted is now the thing holding you slightly back, because management is not a harder version of your old job. It is a different job. The technical skill is not wasted, but it can no longer be the main thing. Your value now is measured through other people, not through your own hands. Pick one management skill you have been avoiding because it does not come naturally, giving feedback, delegating without taking it back, having the political conversation, and practice it on purpose this week. You will be clumsy at first, the way you once were clumsy at the technical work before you mastered it. That is the point. You are learning a new craft, and you have learned a hard craft before.
