How do I stop my reactions from hijacking me under pressure?
You are working to govern your appetites and your reactions, and yet under real pressure they still grab the wheel. Do not read that as failure. It is the ordinary shape of this work. The impulses were built over years, and they are fast, faster than thought. When the heat rises they fire before your better judgment has even arrived. Everyone who has ever mastered themselves has stood exactly where you are standing. The thing to understand is that you will probably never stop the first flash of anger or craving from appearing. That is not the battle. The battle is the small gap between the impulse and the action, and that gap is where all your freedom lives. You cannot stop the wave from rising, but you can learn not to be knocked over by it. The skill is not silencing the reaction. It is not obeying it. So build the pause, because the pause is everything. When you feel yourself getting hijacked, take one breath before you speak or act, and in that breath name what you feel, just to yourself. That naming turns the reaction from a driver into a passenger. You will not get it every time. Get it a little more often each week. That slow widening of the gap is self-mastery, and it is won one pause at a time.
