How do I stop taking work calls during family time?
You bring the family to the park, the trip, the day out, and then you spend it on the phone, stepping away again and again until the outing is just scenery behind your working. The people you brought along came to be with you, and they end up watching you work instead. Children and partners do not remember the ideas you were so busy protecting. They remember whether you were there. Presence is the whole gift of a day out, and a call taken in the middle of it quietly says the person on the phone matters more than the people in front of you. You do not mean that. But that is the message they receive. So draw one clear line and hold it. Before the next outing, decide the hours you are unreachable, tell the few people who might truly need you, and leave the phone in your pocket or the car. If a real emergency comes it will find you. Everything else can wait a few hours. The outing is not the backdrop to your work. Let it be the thing itself.
