How do I tell the truth as a journalist when it costs me access?

Telling the truth would be simple if it were free. It is not. It can cost you access, sometimes your safety, and often the easier, more popular story everyone would rather you tell. Feeling that cost is not weakness. It is you understanding exactly what the job asks of you. Access is a tool, not the goal. The moment you protect access by softening the truth, the access is worthless, because you have traded away the only thing that made your work matter. The story everyone wants is not always the story that is true. Your duty is to the second one, even when it is lonelier. When the next hard call comes, ask a plain question: am I shaping this for the truth, or for what keeps me comfortable and connected. If it is the second, you already know what to do. Hold the line one story at a time. That is how a reputation for honesty is built, and it is the only thing that lasts.
