How do I treat people in my custody with dignity?

You see custody as a trust, not just a job, and that view is rare in your line of work. The place you work in pushes hard the other way, toward seeing people as cases and threats. Holding on to their humanity, and your own, is a daily act of will, and it is worth it. Dignity here does not mean softness or ignoring what people have done. It means you do not add cruelty that the sentence never called for. You keep your word. You are fair when no one is watching. That steadiness protects them, and it protects who you are becoming. Keep it simple and repeatable. Decide on one standard you will not cross, no matter how tired or provoked you are, and hold it every shift. One line you keep is worth more than a hundred good intentions.
