How do I turn a complicated situation into a clear message?

Taking something tangled and making it simple is one of the hardest things there is. The struggle you feel is not confusion. It is the real difficulty of choosing what to leave out. A clear message is mostly a set of decisions about what not to say. Complexity feels like it all matters, so you try to include everything, and the message drowns. But your audience can only hold one main thing. Your job is to find that one thing, the core they most need, and let the rest fall away or wait for later. Write down everything you want to say, then ask: if they only remember one sentence, which is it. Put that first and cut hard around it. Clarity comes from the courage to leave things out.
