How do I uncover a customer's real needs before it's too late?

You have gotten good at hearing what a prospect says they need. What still slips past you is what sits underneath, the deeper pain they have not named, and who really decides, until the deal is too far along to fix. That is a common ceiling, and getting past it is less about talking more and more about asking better. Surface needs are what people volunteer. The deeper pain and the real players are what you have to draw out, gently and early. People rarely lead with their hardest problem or admit they are not the final decision. You have to make it safe and natural to say so, by asking sooner and listening past the first answer. So add two questions early in your next discovery: what happens if this does not get solved, and who else will weigh in on a decision like this. Ask them before you are invested in the deal. The answers may sting when they come early, but early is exactly when you can still do something with them.
