How do I work with clients from a background different than mine?

You do not need to become an expert in someone's whole culture before you can help them. That is an impossible bar, and chasing it will only make you stiff and afraid. What people actually want is to be seen as themselves, not as a category. So lead with curiosity, not performance. Ask about their world and listen as if you might be wrong. When you do not know something, say so and ask. Most people would far rather be asked than have you pretend or guess. Humility reads as respect. Start with your very next client. Drop the idea that you must have it all figured out, and instead get genuinely interested in this one person in front of you. Difference stops being a wall the moment you treat it as something to learn about together.
