How do I write a rough draft without editing every sentence?

Every sentence gets edited before the next one arrives. You cannot write a rough draft because the editor is switched on from the very first word. The work comes out polished but painfully slow and thin, because you are doing two opposite jobs at the same time and letting one strangle the other. Writing and editing use different parts of you. One generates, messy and fast and unafraid. The other judges, careful and cool. When you run them together, the judge kills each idea before it can grow. A rough draft is supposed to be rough. Its only job is to exist so you have something to shape later. Try writing the next thing without stopping, without deleting, without looking back — even if it is ugly, even if it is wrong. Let it be bad on purpose. Give the generator its turn first and the editor its turn after. You will find the words come faster, and there is far more to work with when you finally do polish it.
